Last Pastoral

At the edge of the Belarusian village of Zalesse (right on the Belarusian-Polish border), where roadside crosses are usually placed, the residents erected a monument inscribed: “1990 год Господи Иисусе Христе сохрани весь мир от атомной войны” (1990, Lord Jesus Christ, save the whole world from nuclear war). We decided to restore this inscription exactly 30 years later. While renewing the words, I thought about the villagers who, at the end of the Soviet Union, placed such a protective sign at the end of their street — a point meant to shield them from an imminent tragedy. Perhaps soon we will see similar monuments rising in many contemporary cities across the world.
The video was created at the end of July, a week before the presidential elections in Belarus in 2020.
